Chilled-water AHUs
Connected to a chiller plant. The standard choice for larger buildings, with capacity controlled by a valve on the coil.
Euroklimat air handling units
Clean, conditioned air for offices, hospitals, factories and malls. Euroklimat chilled-water and DX air handling units and fresh air units, selected and installed by MA Engineering.
The basics
An air handling unit (AHU) is a large cabinet that conditions air and pushes it through a building’s ductwork. Inside, filters clean the air, coils cool or heat it, and fans move it to the rooms. The AHU can also bring in fresh outdoor air and control humidity.
AHUs are the heart of central air conditioning in larger spaces such as malls, halls, hospitals, factories and offices, usually working with chilled water from a chiller plant.
Each AHU is built from sections, so it can be configured for the job: finer filtration for a hospital, heat recovery for a fresh-air system, or extra dehumidification for humid weather.
How it works
Air passes through a series of sections, each doing one job.
Return air from the rooms mixes with fresh outdoor air. Dampers set the proportion of each.
Filter banks remove dust, pollen and fine particles. Filters are graded under ISO 16890 (ePM10, ePM2.5, ePM1); critical areas add HEPA filters graded under EN 1822.
A chilled-water or DX coil cools and dehumidifies the air, and a heating coil warms it in winter. Condensate runs off to a sloped drain pan.
Plug fans or fan arrays push the treated air into the ducts. Variable-speed fans match airflow to demand and save energy.
Fresh air handling units (FAHUs) treat 100% outdoor air. In humid weather they do most of a building’s dehumidification, keeping rooms comfortable and free of damp.
Unit types
Euroklimat builds AHUs for comfort, healthcare and industrial applications.
Connected to a chiller plant. The standard choice for larger buildings, with capacity controlled by a valve on the coil.
Have their own refrigerant coil and outdoor condensing unit, so no chiller is needed. Suit standalone areas and smaller buildings.
Handle 100% outdoor air for ventilation, often with a heat-recovery wheel or plate that pre-cools incoming air using exhaust air.
Smooth, cleanable inner surfaces, well-sealed casings and finer filtration for hospitals, laboratories and pharmaceutical plants.
Close control of temperature and humidity for production areas and clean rooms.
Built from sections to suit plant rooms, rooftops and tight access routes.

Planning a project
An AHU runs every hour the building is occupied. These choices set its air quality and its running cost.
Size the unit from the cooling load and the ventilation each space needs under standards such as ASHRAE 62.1. Too little fresh air makes rooms stuffy; too much wastes energy.
Match filters to the space: offices need less than hospitals. ASHRAE 170 requires at least MERV 16 filtration for operating rooms, and HEPA filters are common there.
In humid conditions, such as in Karachi or during the monsoon, coils must be sized for dehumidification as well as temperature. Drain pans must slope and drain fully to stop bacterial growth.
Efficient fans, low-resistance filters and coils, and variable-speed control cut running costs, because fans run whenever the building is in use.
Leave space to open doors, change filters and pull coils. Pressure gauges across each filter bank show when filters need changing.
Temperature, humidity and CO₂ sensors linked to the BMS let the AHU supply only the air that is needed.

A large unit that filters, cools or heats, and circulates air through a building’s ducts. It can also bring in fresh outdoor air and control humidity.
An AHU is a large central unit that treats air, often including fresh air, and sends it through ducts to many spaces. A fan coil unit (FCU) is a small unit that recirculates and cools the air of one room. Many buildings use both: a fresh-air unit for ventilation and FCUs in each room.
A standard AHU mixes return air from the rooms with some fresh air. A fresh air handling unit (FAHU) treats 100% outdoor air, which means it handles a much larger dehumidification load and often includes heat recovery.
If the building has, or will have, a chiller plant, chilled-water AHUs are usually the better choice. DX AHUs have their own refrigeration and suit standalone areas or buildings without a chiller plant.
It depends on the space. General filters are rated under ISO 16890 (for example ePM10, ePM2.5 and ePM1) or MERV in US standards. Hospitals and clean rooms add HEPA filters rated under EN 1822, such as H13 or H14.
When the pressure drop across them reaches the limit set by the filter maker, rather than on a fixed calendar. A pressure gauge on each filter bank shows this. In dusty conditions it can be much more often than in clean areas.
Variable-speed fans, heat recovery on fresh air, low-resistance filters and coils, and control from CO₂ and occupancy sensors all reduce energy use.
